| 1930 | Summer | Two nests of this species were reported, the first at Hyland Lake, near Minneapolis, on April 26th (the writer). It was situated at least fifty feet from the ground and held two well-developed young. The other nest was found by Ernest Stein and Ralph Woolsey and was placed in a more unusual location, on the ledge of a cliff. It contained one YO\Ulg bird. | ||

| 1933 | Summer | Elovon nests of old baleful-eyed Bubo were reported. Breckenridge found tho first in Anoka County on February 18th. The contents wore 2· eggs. The last was f ound in Rcse(l.u County by Fryklund on April 5th ru1d contained 3 eggs in which incubation was advanced. Him:1enz found 2 largo young of this species in an old Heron1-s nest in the mdst of a Great Bluo Heron colony on l-io.y 4th. The degree of runity -J4 experienced is left to conjecture, but as thex~e were no yotmg herons at this date the two species probably got along fairly well. Stein and the writer found the oustom.a:t:-y stercoraceous pugence permeating the interiors of several hollow--tree habi taions of their acquaintance, but do not feel that it should be classed as an inducement to find owl•s nests. | ||

| 1935 | Summer | Dobie saw a nest in the vicinity of Pnrk Rapids April 2nd. In a nest that hadibeen used for the last several years, BraCkett found 3 downy young one-third grown April 21st about 2 miles west of Shakopee. The nest lay in a large hollow snag of a huge basswood tree. | ||
| 1937 | Summer | On April 7, near Red Wing, Breckenridge saw two young cat owls that could fly; Dr. Mahle found a nest ~hat held one downy owl on April I8, near Plainview, Minn. | ||
| 1938 | Summer | The earliest nest of this species was found at Minneapolis on Washington's birthday by D. Struthers, B. Upson, and W. Zimmerman; it held one egg. R. Voth found the second nest on February 28 at St. Joseph; it was complete but empty. At Bush Lake, Hennepin County, on March 24, K. Carlander located a nest with eggs. The first young were found by G. C. Kutz at Stillwater on April 3· On April 12 at Upsala, A. B. Madden found a nest with one egg; subsequently it har~.:hed. On April 14 at Minneapolis, Struthers and Upson saw 2 young Great Horned Owls. | ||

Due to the fact that the mountain ash trees were denuded of berries by American Robins and other species in migration, Grosbeaks were scarce in the area covered by the trip. During the winter in Duluth about seventy-five Evening Grosbeaks came daily to a feeder. There was an influx of Evening Grosbeaks in southern, w e s t e r n and central Minnesota, due partly, no doubt, to the severity of the weather in January but the scarcity of food in the north was the main reason for their :t]pearance in such unusual numbers. In St. Paul A. C. Rosenwinkel saw several flocks of Evening Grosbeaks, some of them eating sunflower seeds at feeders. One flock fed on seeds of | ||

Sam Cox saw one the entire month of March on Minnesota Point, Duluth. Seen as late as 22 April at Duluth by Jan Green. Barred Owl: Ole Finseth heard one calling at Chub Lake near Carlton, during two weekends in March. Jan Green saw one in Duluth on 4 May. Gordon Gullion saw one on 7 April at the Cloquet Forest Research Station. Dr. Rysgaard saw one at Vasa, Goodhue County on 10 May. | ||

| 1963 | Fall | the Arctic subspecies was found injured by a hunter near St. Cloud on Nov. 8 and brought to Jane Olyphant. She nursed it back to health and released it a short time later, after securing some excellent photographs. The facial discs were snowy white and perhaps the best iden tification character was the iris color -pale lemon-almost a whitish-yellow. On Nov. 24 in Stevens Co., R. Grant reported a very pale Great Horned Owl which he thought may have been the Arctic subspecies. Dr. Warner of the Museum staff also received a re- port of what may have been one just north of Pipestone, in late fall. Does this subspecies move southward in conjunction with the periodic Snowy Owl invasions? | ||
